Being a Sommelier

Introduction

The subject of wine is extremely vast. It is also, theoretically speaking, fairly boring. The only fun bit is the drinking and that too sommeliers and critiques (don't look at me!) manage to drain completely till the very last drop of enjoyment.
Then we complain that wine isn't taking to the main stream!!! Of course not! If I can tank up my buddies for a bottle of decent scotch that costs much lesser than a plonk wine that one can't even pronounce (not even me after that bottle of Scotch!) where is the need to be wine savvy? And all that crap about ordering wine to impress your boss - learn golf instead - it's alcohol-free and also good for your health.
If I had to say just one thing about wine education and wine enjoyment each I would say the following respectively: over-hyped and under-valued. We make such a big deal about being wine educated that I could apply to Harvard and they might just consider me for Dean of the Department!
Wine is meant to be therapeutic, not medicinal. We seem to view it more like the latter: drink as diagnosed by the doctor. We try and knock back absolutely the most un-vinous of wines and don't even enjoy them and yet seem to continue as if part of some morbid ritual. I would be happier if the doctors just didn't ask people to switch to wine but also asked them to try and relax when they have a glass and actually, I daresay, even enjoy it. If you don't like it, get another. Keep trying, till you find something that you do like, or at worst till your bank balance dries up!
People always ask me how they can tell what wines they like and I ask them to make a list of wines they don't like. I hope you would come up with a shorter list that way. For e.g. if you don't like a particular Shiraz mark it and next time you have to try one, be wary. Never write off any wine category unless you are dead sure that it is not the style for you.
I taste a fair amount. As a result I never drink. Even if you ever see me singing my lungs hoarse atop a table at the bar on Saturday night, well that is just me unwinding after a tasting. If you see me nursing my head the next morning, that is just me trying to contain all the information and learning I have acquired the night before. I never do drunk, oh no! Always tasting, I am a sommelier après-tout!
In this section of my site you will find a few chapters to try and answer your wine queries. But just so to make it different, I will not put in the obvious: stuff that you can google and get or stuff that is already in my book - stuff which I too googled and got in the first place.
You can suggest topics you would like me to address. I will either add it here, or else bring it up in the blog section. The adjoining page in this part of the site called Wine Reviews is my take on wines that I have tasted. I have tried to compile them as sanely as possible but given my constant tasting exercises, life is mostly a motionless blur.
But, for the time being, I remain open to all forms of queries and inquisitions. Remember, there are no stupid questions, only stupid people who don't ask any!
